sorry, created a new thread cause I can't reply to the original one I don't know much of her stuff, but what I have heard is pretty good. I don't normally like CW either but there are some exceptions! I've been told she's brilliant live so I'm off to see her next thursday!

I thought it was just me, on that thread the buttons had dissapeared, happens on other proboards too from what I have been reading on 'The Straight Dope' boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=267525Anyway, Gillian Welch is great. Unfortunately I missed her last two live appearances up here, but she is on tour in Britain NOW, last few days. Info on her website here: www.gillianwelch.com/When she started out her music was inded very raw and bleak, but she has mellowed somewhat lately and is more approachable. Well worth seeing if you can make it.

"Soul Journey" is her most recent release, and reputed to be much more mainstream than the previous offerings.
I have "Time(The Revalator)" and agree with you on the best tracks, particularly "Ruination Day", took me ages to work out who it was about.
I also have "Hell Among The Yearlings", which is even less like easy listening. "Caleb Meyer" the intro track is quite harrowing, like sandpapering yourself all over to pass the time.
She is great but very much an aquired taste.

She's definitely an acquired taste... although I've found that I've acquired a taste for most of her stuff - there are still some very country sounding songs that I find hard to listen to. I've been listening to "Soul Journey" a fair bit this week and it does sound a bit more mainstream.... or rather a little closer to mainstream! Highlights for me are 'Look at Miss Ohio', 'One Monkey' and 'Wrecking Ball' (which is damn good!). 'Orphan Girl' off one of her older albums is really good aswell.

Ok, saw her last night at Shepherds Bush Empire. I'm not the most knowledgable or eloquent concert reviewer so I'll just say that the show was bloody amazing!

Glad you enjoyed the performance Lex, and that you felt it was worth going.
Like Carina and Polly, she is very much a loner in that she knows what she wants to do and makes sure she damn well does it and nobody stands in her way. She has very much her own style and approach to music and does not allow any outside influences to affect her creative output.
The 'Acony' label is her own, created so that she would have sole creative control over her work.
Not exactly yer Gand Ol' Oprey?

I havnt seen her live but you just know when an act is going to be good. I'll have to check out the web site to see if shes appearing in the midlands.

That would be great, except I haven't got digital. Maybe they will webcast it?

Just perusing the BC4 site and see a mention of Allison Krause.
After buying the Gillian Welch CD's, I was recommended to try Allisson Krause, which I did. Big Mistake.
