Carina's set sounded great. All new songs from the next album. All songs were pretty heavy. No softer acoustic material. With one exception, Carina played electric guitar on all songs. I would imagine this was geared more to an audience who was there to hear Puscifer. Her band was super tight. They had clearly rehearsed the material well. The audience seemed to receive her well. While seated for the full set, when finished, everyone stood and gave her grand applause.
Carina vocalized on all the Puscifer songs. She played acoustic guitar on several songs with mandolin and even banjo on a couple songs each. She was clearly much more an essential element of the band than when I saw them in March 2010. Not much to say about a Puscifer show that hasn't been said in dozens of reviews. Powerful and entertaining. I doubt I would listen to much of it if it wasn't for Carina's participation but I do really like the music and Maynard has a great voice. My favorite Carina highlights of Puscifer's set is the intro/monologue and "Tumbleweed".
Regrettably, this is the second time I've seen Puscifer (both in Cleveland) and the second time Carina did NOT sing "Rev 22:20". Maynard sang it both times. Damn!!! Last time, I asked Carina about it and she said Maynard decides who will sing it each night. Since Maynard is from the Cleveland area, I suspect he prefers to sing it on his home turf. Also, they aren't playing "The Mission" on this tour (another Carina showcase song).
Carina's Band:
- Carina - guitar
- Sam Stewart - guitar**
- Claire Acey - keyboards & backing vocal**
- Matt McJunkins - bass & backing vocal*
- Jeff Friedl - drums*
** from Nightmare The Cat
* from Puscifer
Carina's Setlist:
Puscifer's set is always the same and easily found on the web.
Set Fire
This is my favorite of her new songs. If you've seen the acoustic church video of this song, this full band version is incredible.
Pick Up the Phone
Essentially not different than the rehearsal video that was around a short while ago but this was much more rehearsed and quite powerful.
Weird Dream
This is the only song of the set I didn't know and couldn't not figure out what the title might be. Started out slow and almost tribel sounding then builds on the heavy side with a repeated lyric was "...didn't want to have to..." Finally, asked Carina two days later in Detroit and she said told me the title.
The Last Time
This was pretty true to the studio version. Because the studio version is so lavish, I had wondered how this would sound live but all elements of the recording were presented here.
Mother's Pride
Powerful song. Didn't know it until tonight that this video is this song.
Girl And The Ghost
For those of you who have heard the full studio version played on LA's KCRW a while back, this was identical. This is the one song Carina played acoustic guitar.
Although I had already downloaded both songs and I don't play much vinyl these days, I still bought her 45. I like to support her product. Here's a couple photos of her with it. Sorry about the quality, they were shot with a cell phone.
Typically, I wouldn't mention this sort of thing, but Carina made mention of it to the audience so, what the hell. Carina's dress for her set was quite low cut in front (seen in the "Tumbleweed" clip linked above). As she was putting on her acoustic guitar, she almost had a Janet Jackson moment. She was having trouble with the strap and said, "My tits are falling out" and a female voice from the audience yells, "I love your tits, Carina!" A funny moment for the evening.
