A hot night in Chicago literally and figurative. A Chicago news report that evening indicated it had been one degree below a record high. And, of course, Carina performed a hot show.
BAND:
Carina Round - Vocals, guitar
Matt McJunkins - Bass guitar, backing vocals
Claire Acey - Backing vocals, samples
Beak Wing - Drums
Pelle Hillström - Guitar
Julie Mitchell - Guitar*
SETLIST (70 minutes):
The Secret of Drowning
Set Fire
Pick Up the Phone
Weird Dream*
Got to Go (L.A. Song)*
The Last Time
You Will be Loved
I Would Die 4 U
Mother's Pride
You and Me
Girl and the Ghost
For Everything a Reason
Into My Blood*
The Beat Kitchen was a very small venue. Much smaller than I had expected. A bit of a dive but in a good way. The concert room is about 30x60 feet with the back corners taken up by the sound gear and merch area.
Show time for the opening act, Holiday House, was 8:PM. We arrived just after 7:00 and encountered Carina setting up her merchandise. We said our hellos, chatted a moment then left her to her business. We even saw her a few minutes later outside the front door talking on her cell phone. I think it's great for an artist to not feel it necessary to hide backstage.
The second opening band was The Canes. Both bands are from the Chicago area. I enjoyed both bands. Holiday house reminded me of a dreamier version of The Kills. The Canes reminded me of the later era Replacements.
Change over for Carina's set was pretty quick with Carina and band walking through the audience carrying gear and doing much of the set up work. Now that's independence for ya! You expected they would set up and start to play. Not so. Once set up, the band left the stage and huddled to the side of the room as the stage lights dimmed to blue and an instrumental version of "The Secret Of Drowning" began to play.
The intro lasted over two minutes then the band snaked its way through the crowd to the stage. A quick "hello" to the crowd and "We just needed a little moment" as "Set Fire" begins. By this time, as many people had filled the room, the temperature and humidity increased. Following the song, Carina was quick to acknowledge the fact, "Holy shit, it's hot...I can see people's sweat dripping onto your head". The venue's air conditioning couldn't keep up. There was one large floor fan that would have helped had it not been for two guys who stood side by side about two feet in front of it preventing it from circulating the room (assholes!). They moved when the show was over.
Regardless of the rain jungle like conditions, Carina and band were troopers and presented a flawless, highly energetic performance. They had no fans on stage, BTW.
For the third and fourth songs, band friend Julie Mitchell played Carina's guitar providing Carina the opportunity to "shake my money maker... what ever that is". Following the two songs, Carina presented the quote of the night... "I'm hot as a ball sack" which she reiterated a few times throughout the evening. The fourth song was "Got To Go (LA Song)" which she seems to not be playing at every show.
The highlight for me was a live performance of "You Will Be Loved". This lovely studio track came dymanically alive as a live performance. The treat of the show was the cover version of Prince's "I Would Die 4 U". Also, liked "Into My Blood" which is the first Carina song I ever heard and I've never seen her do it live before. The rest of the songs I've seen her do live.
A one point, Carina acknowledged Jeff Freidl (Puscifer and recent Carina drummer) in the crowd. She had him come on stage to say hi. I later asked him why he wasn't playing with them. He was on tour with Filter and paths just happened to cross in Chicago.
The heat was clearly evident on the band. Matt's long sleeved(!) shirt was soaked and Carina's make up had began to run giving her an Alice Cooper look. Instead of leaving the stage before the encore, because "...it's simply to hot for that", Carina just chatted with the audience.
Because they were to the darker back, how Pelle and Beak were doing with the heat wasn't so obvious but Beak was working hard and Pelle was wearing a stocking hat. They HAD to be hot. Strangely, Claire seemed barely effected by it.
Perhaps the heat fueled the band's energy. Even during the final number, "Into My Blood", they put forth an energetic performance. Carina utilized every available inch of the small stage. Her dedication to her performance is clearly evident.
After the show, Carina was at her merch table for over an hour because so many people wanted to meet and greet her. I asked her if she had ever played such a hot temperature show. Her reply was, it was the hottest she had EVER done.
